The D2 logo implies "D squared", or "D to the power of D", where D is both the abstract language family defined by The Third Manifesto and a general allusion to "database". It is also an intentional homage to the C2 Wiki, the world's first Wiki run by its inventor Ward Cunningham, to which all Wikis owe enormous gratitude.
